Soon
a springtime day soon
you’ll bring home a girl
for a baby she’s easy
with a baby-book name
and a polka-dot dress
picked out by her mother
she’ll write her name
at school, which is easy
she’s now a big girl
who looks just like her mother
although winter’s soon
she’ll still wear a dress
just like her dress
it’ll be someday soon
that just like her mother
she will outgrow girl
it’s a fear she can’t name
even knowing’s not easy
though it’s not easy
she will tell her mother
someday not-so-soon
in a saying-yes-dress
she’ll marry a girl
take her heart and her name
someday soon “girl”
like her dress
and her name
won’t sit quite so easy
without her mother
she’ll choose a new name
which’ll fit fast and soon
she’ll bring home a girl who will fit in so easy
in a lover-bought dress
